As teens, it can be very difficult to create budgets without a steady income. Maybe you get a weekly allowance or work part-time. But the good news is that you can manage your money and even save for things you want without a full-time paycheck. Here’s how:
Track Every Dollar
The first step is knowing exactly how much money you have. Write down every allowance, gift, or paycheck you get. You can use a small notebook, your phone’s notes app, or a budgeting app (like those on the resources page 😉).
Cover Essentials
Make a list of things you must pay for, like school supplies, transport, or lunc
h. These are your “needs,” and they come before any other type of spending.
Save First, Spend Later
Even if it’s just a small amount, put some money into savings as soon as you get it. A good rule is 10 to 20% of whatever you earn. Treat savings like a fixed expense, just like your essentials.

Separate Needs from Wants
It’s easy and great to spend on clothes, online shopping, or hangouts with friends. That’s totally fine, but only after you’ve covered your needs and saved some money. Keep track of “wants” so you don’t blow through your money.
Build a Small Rainy Day Fund
Unexpected expenses happen. Even saving just $1–$5 a week can help when you need it. This fund is for emergencies, so you don’t get stuck without cash.
Adjust and Learn
Your income may change month to month. Keep track of how much you earn and spend, then adjust your budget. For example, summer jobs or holiday tips are a great time to save extra.
Remember: Small steps add up. Saving just a little each week teaches us good habits that will help when your income grows. With a bit of planning, we can all feel in control of our money!
